“Blues in Schools” grant awarded to the Boston Blues Society

The Boston Blues Society is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded our first state grants for a new “Blues in Schools” program modeled after the Memphis-based Blues Foundation’s program.

The program sends local bands to high and middle schools to talk to students about the history of the blues, and perform various styles of the music.

The Delta Generators, the 2008 winner of the Boston Blues Challenge, and the band the society sponsored at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in February (they made it to the finals), will give the program March 19 at Clinton High School in Clinton, Mass., for all middle and high school music classes, as well as their advanced placement history classes.

The program is funded with a $500 grant from the Clinton Cultural Council.

The Delta Generators will do a similar program on May 15 at the Tahanto Regional High School in Boylston, Mass., with a $500 grant awarded by the Boylston Cultural Council.

Daniel Banks, a 17-year-old drummer from Pembroke who has played with several local bands - regularly with Ricky “King” Russell - and has appeared on the David Letterman Show, will do a Blues In Schools program in the spring at the Pembroke Community Middle School in Pembroke, Mass. A $300 grant was awarded for that program by the Pembroke Cultural Council.
