100 Miles From Memphis

On her new album Sheryl Crow goes back to her roots and delivers a number of blues and soul tracks influenced by the music she grew up listening to.

While her singles have been staples on popular radio since her debut, this is actually the first Sheryl Crow album I've fully listened to and I must saw it impressed me.

On 100 Miles From Memphis, Crow drops her pop persona and tackles a genre that is pretty sacred to some. Now I'll admit I'm not much of a Memphis Blues expert but I think she does a pretty decent job.

Long-time fans expecting her normal poppy sound won't be disappointed either though as there are a couple of tracks that bring her earlier material to mind. The album also includes a cover of the Jackson 5's "Want you Back" as a bonus track.

The thing that surprised me the most is how Crow was able to get her voice so high, as it sounds identical to a young Michael Jackson. In the end this album might not reach the popularity of some of her earlier releases but long time fans who pick it up will be getting a hidden gem.

Highlights include: Our Love Is Fading, Summer Day and 100 Miles From Memphis.
