Amy Winehouse’s first album ‘Frank’ was a success in the UK but ‘Back to Black’ is the album that garnered her North American success. ‘Back To Black’ (2006) was nominated for 6 Grammy Awards and won 5, which tied her for the record for most wins by a female artist with Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill, Beyonce, Andrea Krauss, and Norah Jones.
Unfortunately, since 2007 Winehouse made headlines more for her drug and alcohol abuse instead of for her music. In her efforts to get her life and career back on track, Winehouse recently worked with some of the industries finest like Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, and of course, Mark Ronson.
After passing away on July 24th, the music industry has been very vocal during this sad time. Here some of the heart-felt responses to this tragedy.
“She was my musical soulmate and like a sister to me. This is one of the saddest days of my life.†We’ve rounded up a few more of the most moving tributes. (Mark Ronson)
“I’m totally devastated… Amy was my inspiration.†(Dionne Bromfield)
Amy paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again whilst being fearlessly hilarious and blase about the whole thing. I don’t think she ever realised just how brilliant she was and how important she is, but that just makes her even more charming. (Adele)
“She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent and has come to such an early end. She was a lovely and intelligent person and when we recorded together she gave a soulful and ¬extraordinary performance.†(Tony Bennett)
“One of the most seminal artists this country has ever produced.†(Sir Elton John)
“Amy changed pop music forever, I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues.†(Lady Gaga)
“I shared some wonderful musical moments with Amy. I feel very lucky to have done so. She was a wonderful person with an extraordinary talent.†(Jamie Cullum)
Before Winehouse’s passing she had spoken of a third album that has yet to be released. We’re hoping for the album to materialize soon but until then, here are some of Winehouse’s songs that will never be forgotten.
