AUSTIN (KXAN) - If Austin is known for anything besides ‘keeping it weird’ and state business, music is definitely the next thing that comes to mind in this political seat of Texas.

Blues are a traditional southern style of music and they’re making a revival on 6th Street at Blue Moon Rock N Blues, formerly Nuno’s Blues Bar.

The bar is under new management and has gone through an extensive renovation that fits well with its mission to bring blues to Austin. The newly remodeled venue sets itself apart from many bars on 6th street with dimly lit blue lighting; it almost feels like a dive bar, with an intentionally relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff.

One new Austinite, named Birdlegg, performs every Tuesday at Blue Moon Rock N Blues and he definitely steals the stage.

A man who can only be described as exasperatingly talented, Birdlegg puts his life experiences together with a harmonica and three member band called the Texas Tight Fit Blues Band, to the excitement of patrons of all ages who watch his show every Tuesday.

With little advertising except for the blues sounds coming from the front door and spilling onto 6th Street, the place seems to draw in large crowds after only being open for a little over a month. The bouncer at the front door even pointed out they don’t have a business sign up.

Birdlegg said he came to Austin six months ago due to an unusual set of circumstances. He recently found out his wife who had been missing for over 30 years had moved to Austin. Due to a loss of memory his wife never told him where she was. To make matters worse she met another man, unknowingly leaving him behind with unanswered questions.

Birdlegg says he is reacquainting himself with his wife, whom he says he is still legally married to. He also says his move to Texas from Oakland California has helped him to kick a drug habit; he’s been clean for several months now.

In many of the songs he performed Birdlegg describes broken relationships, bouts with his former girlfriends and some time in jail and being broke. Melded together with a classic blues sound and very talented harmonist, listeners can enjoy his show for free and if you feel the need, donations are welcomed to help Birdlegg pay the rest of the band.

Blue Moon Rock N Blues is located at 422 E 6th St and is open 7 days a week from 8:00p.m. until 2:00a.m. Rumor has it the owner of Blue Moon performs on stage from time to time. For showtimes and information call them at 512-476-1077.
