n 2006, Aunt Kizzy’z Boyz finished second in the International Blues Challenge band competition. In 2007, Nathan James and Ben Hernandez walked away from the IBC as solo/duo champions. In 2008, Sue Palmer and Her Motel Swing Orchestra won best self-produced CD at the IBC.

And, approaching the age of 80, hometown legend Tomcat Courtney is enjoying plaudits for his first national release. This local secret is now being heralded in far-off places.

Do you see a trend here?

What is happening is that San Diego — an unlikely hotbed for the blues — is gaining international recognition for the quality of its blues musicians. Blues Lovers United of San Diego, an affiliate of the Memphis-based Blues Foundation, has been at the heart of that surge.

BLUSD helps give the San Diego blues community a framework. Every night of the week, live blues flourishes. BLUSD offers a calendar each month with the most extensive list of blues shows anywhere in the community.

When national acts visit, BLUSD spreads the word. BLUSD rallies its members and supporters to attend blues shows that BLUSD has identified as “table gigs.” We are there with our literature and offerings to encourage people to support the music they love.

BLUSD has a monthly newsletter that reports on local acts, blues experiences, offers CD reviews and steers people to the best in the blues.

And, BLUSD has one of the nation’s most extensive Blues In The Schools programs, which entertains, educates and enlightens thousands of students each year.

It doesn’t matter if you never heard of BLUSD. You’ll soon find it is a non-profit organization of volunteers doing good and worthwhile work in the community. Whether your are a casual fan of the blues or a serious musician, explore our web site and the offerings of our blues community.

It’s never too late to jump in. Just ask Tomcat Courtney.
